Phenolic Antioxidant Supporting Long-Lasting Performance in Industrial Materials

The class of chemical additives known as Phenolic Antioxidants plays a critical role in extending the lifespan and performance of polymers by neutralising free radicals that cause thermal and oxidative degradation. These stabilizers—especially sterically hindered phenols—are highly effective radical scavengers, donating hydrogen atoms from their phenolic hydroxyl groups to capture peroxy radicals and terminate chain-reaction pathways. Their low volatility and compatibility with various polymer matrices make them particularly suitable for demanding high-temperature processes. 

In end-use applications, their role becomes even more critical. During long-term service, phenolic antioxidants protect polymers from aging, embrittlement and loss of functionality by retarding thermo-oxidative degradation. Recent research has shown that stabilisers with particular molecular structures—such as hindered phenols with electron-donating groups—can further improve resistance to oxidative aging in engineering plastics like polyamide-6.  Although highly effective, phenolic antioxidants are often used in combination with secondary stabilisers (like phosphites or thio-esters) to optimise long-term performance and mitigate by-product accumulation. As sustainability and material durability become more critical in modern polymer design, phenolic antioxidants remain a foundational solution for stabilising plastics and elastomers under harsh environmental and thermal conditions. In polymer processing, phenolic antioxidants provide exceptional polymer stabilizer protection, helping preserve melt viscosity, prevent discoloration, minimise degradation during extrusion or molding, and maintain mechanical integrity over time.
